Ethics, Cultural Diversity and Clinical Practice

Program Description:

In this workshop, participants will be introduced to the multicultural theories related to international play therapy practice including concepts related to social diversity, cultural imperialism, privilege, oppression and power differences. This course is designed as an introduction for any play therapist interested in providing play therapy services in collaboration with other play therapists in a global context. Using a cultural humility lens, participants will examine their own implicit and explicit biases, create personal accountability plans, and identify multiple culturally appropriate therapeutic skills to use in practice. Emphasis on intercultural learning processes and best practices for continual self-reflection and self-evaluation will be required during small and large group discussions and personal reflection assignments. 

Learning Objectives: 

At the end of this training, participants will be able to:
  1. Compare and contrast the cultural backgrounds, influences, and biases (including but not limited to religion, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity, and race) of play therapy practitioners representing multiple countries from a global context.

  1. Play therapists will be able to identify at least three different culturally appropriate therapeutic skills when engaging in multi-international settings and practice.

  1. Play therapists will be able to list two or more examples of  power/privilege, cultural imperialism, oppression, social justice, and international ethics.

  1. From a perspective of cultural humility, play therapists will be able to critically analyze their own personal implicit biases and prejudices and to take action to make personal changes as self-awareness grows.

Continuing Education Credit:

2  APT Non-Contact Credit Hours, 2 NBCC Credit Hours

**The Association of Play Therapy now requires 6 hours of training in the area of Play Therapy Cultural and Social Diversity Topics for your initial RPT credentialing application and two hours for all renewal applications.  This course will cover the topics required by the Association for Play Therapy for 2 hours towards those requirements.**

Instructor Janet Courtney, PhD, LCSW, RPT-S

Janet Courtney, PhD, LCSW, RPT-S is the Founder of FirstPlay® Therapy and offers a Certification to Practitioners in FirstPlay® Infant Massage & Kinesthetic Storytelling®. Since 1997, she has been an Adjunct Professor at Barry University, Miami, FL where she also obtained her Doctoral degree in Social Work completing a dissertation in Developmental Play Therapy, touch and attachment. She is a Registered Play Therapy Supervisor and past President of the Florida Association for Play Therapy. Dr. Courtney is author/editor of the books Infant Play Therapy: Foundations, Models, Programs and Practice and Healing Child and Family Trauma through Expressive and Play Therapies: Art, Nature, Storytelling, Body, Mindfulness” book. She is co-author of the groundbreaking book, Touch in Child Counseling and Play Therapy: An Ethical and Clinical Guide, and is published in the International Journal of Play Therapy, the Journal of the American Art Therapy Association, and the Journal of Therapeutic Horticulture. Other publications include chapters in the books, Environmental Expressive Therapies: Nature-Assisted Theory and Practice (2017) and in Play-based Interventions for Children and Adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorders (2012). Janet’s career has focused on attachment and bonding, and the importance of nurturing touch between parents and their young children. As a wholistic oriented practitioner, she believes in the power of infant massage and joyful “first-play” activities (for example, patty cake and peek-a-boo) as the best start for infant mental health.Dr. Courtney is an internationally recognized play therapist and has been invited to speak on topics of infant and childhood play therapy in England, Ireland, Morocco, Russia, Ukraine, and the Cayman Islands. She has acted as a consultant to several Florida based children’s agencies, and supervises clinicians seeking Florida board licensure, as well as, those seeking Certification as a Registered Play Therapist. Dr. Courtney has developed a new process of storytelling called FirstPlay® Kinesthetic Storytelling® which merges imagery relaxation skills with joyful first-play interactive parent-child activities. Her children’s book, The Magic Rainbow Hug©, makes this technique directly accessible to professionals, parents, and the children who can most benefit from its use.

Instructor Liliana Baylon, LMFT-S, RPT-S

Liliana Baylon, LMFT-S, RPT-S Liliana Baylon has a master’s degree in Counseling & Marriage, Family, & Child Therapy as well as an MBA from University of Phoenix in Colorado. Since entering the therapy field, Liliana has developed an interest and niche in treating couples and children who have experienced trauma, abuse, and multicultural issues from an attachment lens. To better treat these couples and children, Liliana has received training in different modalities, some of which she is a trained educator. Liliana is also a AAMFT Approved Supervisor, EMDRIA Approved Consultant, Registered Play Therapist Supervisor, Synergetic Play Therapy Consultant, EFT Supervisor-in-Training, EMDR Certified, TheraPlay Level 1, Independent Facilitator of the Becoming a Love and Logic Parent Curriculum, Bring Baby Home Gottman Trained Educator, Gottman Seven Principles Program Educator, Completed Level 2 Training in Gottman Method Couples Therapy. She brings a unique cultural lens into her therapy and supervision sessions. Liliana is passionate about working with fellow mental health professionals to embrace curiosity, inspiration, and discover meaning to rise to their full potential from attachment and cultural lenses.

Instructor Florence A. Ochanda

Florence A. Ochanda is a Counselling Psychologist - Marriage and Family in Kenya. She is the Vice-Chair of the Association of Play Therapy Kenya (APTK) andCCPT - APTK Approved. Ms. Ochanda's clinical experience was formed working for a non-governmental organisation with children from diverse backgrounds coming to seek counselling services. She is a skilled and effective children's counsellor with 10+ clinical experience in levels of treatment. She has excellent documentation and problem solving skills with management and supervisory experience, and an expertise in multicultural counselling.

  • Do I need to be present for this course or can I watch the recording?

    This course is being provided live on Zoom. Due to the highly experiential nature of this course and the sensitivity of discussions among course participants, THERE WILL BE NO RECORDING made available to participants who miss any portion of the course. * However, the course may be recorded by the instructors for quality assurance purposes and for review to improve the course in the future. No participant comments will be shared publicly.

  • How do I prepare for this class meeting?

    This course has a brief, pre-course assignment that will be sent out 24 hours before the workshop begins. This assignment includes watching a short video AND submitting a written response to three reflective questions. Completion of this assignment is considered a requirement of the course and a certificate will not be issued without its submission.

  • Is there APT credit?

    This live course follows the revised APT guidelines for a live webinar which include but are not limited to: are limited to no more than 50 attendees, attendee cameras must be on throughout the webinar; a post-test is required at the end of the training

  • Do I need to attend every date this course is offered?

    This course is being offered multiple times. The material and content is the same during each presentation. Please do not register for more than one course date. Continuing education credit will only be provided for ONE course attendance, regardless of the number of courses that you attend.
