Course Description:


There are multiple lenses for clinical conceptualization in Play Therapy and Play Therapy supervision. Play therapists and play therapy supervisors strengthen their clinical practice, relationships and consultations by practicing cultural humility and challenging implicit and overt cultural biases and minimizing cultural encapsulation. 


In this interactive recorded webinar we will explore the salience of race and culture in creating a therapeutic alliance through authentic learning experiences, clinical examples, and discussion. This workshop will challenge play and child therapists and play therapy supervisors to examine and assess how biases show up in play therapy, the impact bias has on our child clients, their families and our communities and what we can do to engage in the lifelong practice of cultural humility. 



Objectives


1.Participants of this workshop will be able to define cultural humility related to the practice of play and child therapy practice. 


2.Participants of this webinar will be able to identify cultural encapsulation related to the practice of play and child therapy practice. 


3.Participants of this workshop will demonstrate viewing play therapy through a cultural humility perspective. 


4.Participants of this workshop will list ways in which play therapists can practice cultural humility. 


5.Participants in this webinar will discuss how to cultivate cultural humility in various play therapy models so that culture and race are always considered and incorporated into play therapy practice. 


6.Participants of this webinar will demonstrate supervision and self-supervision play therapy skills that directly address and cultivate cultural humility.

Instructor Jodi Mullen, PhD, LMHC, NCC, RPT-S, CCPT-S

Dr. Jodi Mullen is a professor at SUNY Oswego in the Counseling & Psychological Services Department. She primarily teaches in the Mental Health Counseling Program. She is the director of Integrative Counseling Services, with several offices in Central New York. Dr. Mullen is an international speaker, author, credentialed play therapist and play therapy supervisor. Dr. Mullen has over 30 years in the field of counseling. She has authored books on play therapy, counseling children and adolescents, supervision, grief counseling and parenting. Dr. Mullen was the 2008 recipient of the Key Award for Professional Training & Education through the Association for Play Therapy. She is the proud Momma of Leah & Andrew.
