Course Description

This 5 hour experiential, interactive training provides mental health professionals providing psychotherapy services training in the essential and ethical obligation to attend to self care along with thorough examination of the signs and effects of burnout, compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma. Participants will be provided opportunity to examine case studies, apply principles and develop an actionable plan for self care.

Learning objectives:

  • Name the 5 Ethical Principles

  • Report what the codes of ethics  cite in terms of ethical considerations related to a therapist’s self care.

  • Name ethical principles that a therapist is at risk of violating if self care is neglected.

  • Expand upon why self care is considered an ethical issue.

  • List 5 reasons it is essential for therapists to attend to regular self care.

  • Define and distinguish burn-out, compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma

  • List the signs of burnout, compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma

  • Cite the reasons the research supports mindfulness training and practice as an important part of self care.

  • Name 20 examples of regular self care actions

  • Describe how to address the issue of self care with colleagues and supervisees.

  • Design a personalized, actionable self care plan.

Instructor Lynn Louise Wonders, LPC, RPT-S
