When children habitually become flooded emotionally, cry and scream readily and seem to be unable to calm themselves we call this “dysregulation.” This 2 hour webinar will address the neuroscience of dysregulation as well as how particular directive and facilitative play therapy interventions can assist in helping children learn how to self-soothe, how to regulate and develop skills for problem solving and adaptive expression.
After taking this training, participants will be able to achieve the following learning objectives:
1. Describe how brain development and brain functioning relate to child clients coming to play therapy with high levels of emotional reactivity.
2. List 15 facilitative play therapy interventions for the play room to help children experience a cooling off of the overheated emotional mid-brain and an ability to then learn new skills for problem solving and adaptive expression which yields an experience of mastery and empowerment.
3. Explain how to engage the parents and other caretakers using playful techniques that can be observed at home and school to diffuse and circumvent emotional boil-overs as well as ways to reinforce the course of the play therapy treatment plan outside of the play room.
