Course description

** In order to sign up for this course, you need to have successfully completed and passed the FirstPlay  Kinesthetic Storytelling®  Level 1 & 2 Courses. **

24.5 hours of training, 13.5 APT non-contact hours (11 skills/methods and 5 special populations), 3 hours Individual and 8 hours live group Reflective consultation.

In Level 3, we build upon what we learned in Levels 1 & 2 and we delve deeper into understanding Ericksonian principles while also learning how to create therapeutic stories from scratch using a FirstPlay® Child Story-Interview Grid. We begin to practice getting in touch with our own storyteller and writer within. In this, you will be asked to create a therapeutic story utilizing the FirstPlay® Child Story-Interview Grid based upon an interview with a child volunteer. This will be reviewed together during the reflective consultation sessions. During Level 3, you are provided with the FirstPlay Parent Manual©, which is a manualized guide to use with children and parents in sessions, that contains the past modules of Level’s 1 & 2: “Getting Started” activities and “Ready Made” stories, as well as the modules of Level 3 “Creating Stories from Scratch” and the “Child as Storyteller.”  You will learn how to implement the FirstPlay Parent Manual© with children and families based upon the developmental stage of the child and the child’s presenting problems.

Level III: Includes three (3) Individual Consultation Sessions and eight (8) hours of  live Group Reflective Consultation Sessions (the costs of the Consultation sessions are included in the course fees). 

The student will complete all three Individual Consultation sessions before attending the remaining Group Consultation sessions.  The first Individual Consultation will be scheduled directly with Dr. Courtney upon complete of Module Eleven.  During this session, the student will be required to complete a personal story for review during the meeting.  

The second Individual Consultation session will be scheduled directly with Dr. Courtney after the completion of Module Twelve.  During this meeting, the student will be required to submit a video of themselves practicing creating a story with a volunteer child (can also be done with an adult).

The third Individual Consultation with be scheduled with Dr. Courtney directly after the completion of Module Thirteen.  During this meeting, the student will be required to submit a video of themselves guiding a volunteer parent/child dyad in the creation of a story.  

Upon completion of the three Individual Sessions, the student will then participate in eight (8) hours of  Group Reflective Consultation. These sessions will assist to ground the theory and interventions learned in Level III into practice and will also provide an opportunity to practice and review participant therapeutic stories created from the FirstPlay Kinesthetic Storytelling Child Interview Grid©.

Janet Courtney, PhD, LCSW, Registered Play Therapy Supervisor, is Founder of FirstPlay® Therapy and offers a Certification to Practitioners in FirstPlay® Infant Story-Massage and FirstPlay Kinesthetic Storytelling®. She is an Adjunct Professor at Barry University, Miami, FL where she also obtained her Doctoral degree conducting research in Developmental Play Therapy, touch and attachment. She is immediate past Chair of the Association for Play Therapy Ethics and Practice committee and past President of the Florida Association for Play Therapy.

Dr. Courtney is author and co-editor of the groundbreaking book, “Touch in Child Counseling and Play Therapy: An Ethical and Clinical Guide,  and is excited to announce her upcoming book, “Infant Play Therapy: Foundations, Models, Programs, and Practice,” out this Spring, 2020; along with her other book, “Healing Child and Family Trauma through Expressive and Play Therapies: Art, Nature, Storytelling, Body, and Mindfulness.” She is also published in the International Journal of Play Therapy, the Journal of the American Art Therapy Association, and the Journal of Therapeutic Horticulture. Other publications include chapters in the books, “Environmental Expressive Therapies: Nature-Assisted Theory and Practice,” and in “Play-based Interventions for Children and Adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorders.”

She has developed a new attachment-based play therapy model of storytelling called FirstPlay Kinesthetic Storytelling® which merges skills of mindfulness with joyful first-play interactive parent-child activities. Her children’s book, The Magic Rainbow Hug©, makes this model directly accessible to professionals, parents, and the children who can most benefit from its use.

As a wholistic oriented practitioner, Dr. Courtney believes in the power of therapeutic storytelling, nurturing touch interactions, and joyful “first-play” activities between parents and their infants and children as vital foundations for healthy growth and development and to heal and repair relational bonds. Dr. Courtney has acted as a consultant to several Florida based children’s agencies, and supervises clinicians seeking Florida board licensure, as well as, those seeking Certification as a Registered Play Therapist. She is an internationally recognized play therapist and has been invited to speak and keynote on topics of infant and childhood play therapy in England, Ireland, Morocco, Russia, Ukraine, and the Cayman Islands.

Because this course will allow practitioners to become Certified FirstPlay Kinesthetic Storytelling® Practitioners (and that certification is provided by and maintained through Dr. Courtney), all APT contact hours are provided through Dr Courtney at Developmental Play and Attachment Therapies (APT Approved Provider 10-287).

 

APT credits available as listed in the course description are provided by Dr. Janet A. Courtney through Developmental Play & Attachment Therapies approved provider 10-287. Play therapy credit is available to mental health professionals only as listed in each course description.  Courses that do not qualify for play therapy credits are clearly marked.

NBCC credits, when available are provided by Jennifer Taylor.  Jennifer Taylor has been approved by NBCC as an Approved Continuing Education Provider ACEP No. 6928. Programs that do not qualify for NBCC credit are clearly marked.
