School Refusal is a challenging problem to manage. The goal of the workshop is for you to learn how to take the lead role immediately and develop comprehensive play therapy based strategies on getting the child back to attending school on a regular basis. Whether you are a school counselor or therapist you will learn play-based interventions and play therapy strategies to help support the family and child in the common goal of attending school. Learning objectives are:
1. Participants using play therapy services with children will learn the characteristics and risk factors associated with school refusal.
2. Participants will learn how to incorporate mindfulness based play therapy interventions as well as cognitive behavioral play based interventions. They will also learn how to incorporate exposure therapy in working with child and family to support the goal of attending school.
3. Participants will learn how to help the school (teachers, school counselors, and administrators) support the progress of play therapy by using specific interventions at home and school that support the child and the family.
