Description:
Children (and their parents) are faced with enormous challenges right now in terms of managing their emotions and finding a sheltered, calm internal space in the midst of family and school changes and demands. Teaching and developing mindful engagement through the lens of building a special island in their imagination, anchored by drawings and reflection, will enhance their internal resources and mastery of self-calming and regulatory skills. This workshop will teach participants to engage their clients and parents in developing a passage to a special island adventure that is under the child’s direct control, strengthening and protecting their ability to cope with these challenges and disruptions to their in daily life.
Learning Objectives:
At the close of this workshop, participants will be able to:
1. List at least 5 essential features of helping parents and children create the child’s Special Island.
2. Describe at least 3 challenges when assisting the child the create their island world.
3. Discuss how this technique can enhance the therapeutic relationship in play therapy.
