Course Description:


In this course, Dr. Mullen explores what children experience during and after trauma. She covers the symptomatic behaviors associated with trauma in children, and how children respond. Participants will also learn how play therapy is used to treat children traumatized during a disaster, and how the approach is helpful for addressing the specific needs of the child.


Objectives

This workshop will teach participants to:

1) Identify the multiple and varied losses experienced by children who have experienced disaster

2) Recognize trauma symptoms in children

3) Understand when and how to utilize developmentally sound helping interventions with children after a disaster

4) Engage children in a helping capacity.

Instructor Jodi Mullen, PhD, LMHC, NCC, RPT-S, CCPT-S

Dr. Jodi Mullen is a professor at SUNY Oswego in the Counseling & Psychological Services Department. She primarily teaches in the Mental Health Counseling Program. She is the director of Integrative Counseling Services, with several offices in Central New York. Dr. Mullen is an international speaker, author, credentialed play therapist and play therapy supervisor. Dr. Mullen has over 30 years in the field of counseling. She has authored books on play therapy, counseling children and adolescents, supervision, grief counseling and parenting. Dr. Mullen was the 2008 recipient of the Key Award for Professional Training & Education through the Association for Play Therapy. She is the proud Momma of Leah & Andrew.
