Embark on a transformative journey into the realm of play therapy with our workshop, “Guide to Play Therapy with the Modern Family,” led by experts Clair Mellenthin, LCSW, RPT-S, and Holly Willard, LCSW, RPT-S. 

As family dynamics evolve, we’re seeing more diverse family systems including single-parent households, biracial families, grandparents raising children, LGBTQ+ parents, and other non-heteronormative arrangements. It’s crucial that our approaches honor these unique family systems, ensuring that every child and caregiver feels seen, supported, and empowered. Explore innovative play therapy techniques tailored for modern families navigating challenges like divorce, abuse, trauma, and neglect.

Objectives


1. Develop a comprehensive understanding of attachment theory and its application within the unique dynamics of modern family systems affected by divorce, abuse, trauma, and neglect.

2. Practice 3 play therapy techniques designed to address parent-child conflict

3. Determine the developmental stages of attachment needs and behaviors to identify maladaptive responses in children and families.

4. Articulate the psychological impact and long-term effects of emotional trauma on a client’s mental health.

5. Create guided imagery exercises to foster self-esteem and self-worth for increased self and co-regulation.

6. Implement two play therapy strategies aimed at fostering resilience within modern family systems.

Courses that do not qualify for play therapy credit are clearly listed.

Instructor Clair Mellenthin, PhD, LCSW, RPT-S

Clair Mellenthin, PhD, LCSW, RPT-S holds a Master’s Degree in Social Work from the University of Southern California. Throughout her career, she has focused on providing play therapy to children, teens, and their families. She is currently the Director of Child & Adolescents at Wasatch Family Therapy.Ms. Mellenthin is a sought after supervisor, training graduate students and interns in play therapy, and an adjunct faculty member at the University of Southern California MSW program. She is the Past-President of the Utah Association For Play Therapy and remains an active member on the Board of Directors. She is the author of Attachment Centered Play Therapy, My Many Colors of Me Workbook.

Guest Speaker Holly Williard, LCSW, RPT-S

Holly Willard LCSW, RPT-S is the owner of Grandview Family Counseling, a private practice in Bountiful, Utah. Holly Willard completed her Masters in Social Work from the University of Utah in 2000 and received her LCSW in 2002. Since that time, she has worked in various clinical settings from school counseling, residential care, foster-care, outpatient clinics and private practice. Holly Willard has extensive background working with children, teens and families. Holly is a contributor to local television news and radio. She is a Registered Play Therapist Supervisor, past president of Utah Play Therapy Board and presents nationally on play therapy topics. Holly Willard is an adjunct professor at Utah Valley University. Holly Willard is certified in TF-CBT, EMDR and Daring Way Facilitator.
