A Wellness Retreat for Play Therapists

with Clair Mellenthin, Lisa Dion and Jen Taylor

Program Description: In this four day, retreat-style workshop, participants will use the power of metaphor to explore compassion fatigue, vicarious trauma and burn-out experienced by play therapists. Participants will explore the stress responses observed during the play therapy process for both the therapist and for the client and learn strategies to manage dysregulation. Participants will examine how attachment styles and relationships impact resiliency after a traumatic world event and use their reflections of their play therapy cases during experiential exercises, therapuetic writing/journaling exercises and group discussions. Participants will analyze the role of gratitude in overcoming challneges and create a self-care plan for use upon return to the play therapy space (whether virtual, in-person or hybrid). Explore various components of self-compassion and discuss its clinical applications and importance for the play therapist Implement 2 journaling interventions that foster self-reflection and case conceptualization of your work in the playroom. Examine what regulation is and what it is not and how play therapists can use this knowledge to deal with compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma Identify your own patterns of dysregulation and ways to regulate through the activation to support your ability to self-regulate and co-regulate Explore ways to identify different states of dysregulation in your own body and your child client’s body Identify and discuss at least 4 ideas from neurobiology, the creative arts, and mindfulness to help you stay present in the playroom and deal with the stress in between sessions Examine the role that “should's" play in the development of symptoms in the therapist and the child client. Utilize mindfulness and breath work to address stress responses and prevent burnout for the play therapist Examine the ethics and importance of self care practices as part of the professional development of the play therapist Create and identify at least 2 strategies to incorporate in the play therapist's self care plan Examine the role that gratitude plays in overcoming challenges and regulating the nervous system Learn how to notice and manage your own personal stress responses Identify ways that your attachment styles and resources have played a role in your response to stressLearn how to process traumatic events and create a meaningful narrative in your play therapy practice using a four-part journaling technique. Instructor Clair Mellenthin, PhD, LCSW, RPT-S

Clair Mellenthin, PhD, LCSW, RPT-S holds a Master’s Degree in Social Work from the University of Southern California. Throughout her career, she has focused on providing play therapy to children, teens, and their families. She is currently the Director of Child & Adolescents at Wasatch Family Therapy.Ms. Mellenthin is a sought after supervisor, training graduate students and interns in play therapy, and an adjunct faculty member at the University of Southern California MSW program. She is the Past-President of the Utah Association For Play Therapy and remains an active member on the Board of Directors. She is the author of Attachment Centered Play Therapy, My Many Colors of Me Workbook.

Instructor Lisa Dion, LPC, RPT-S

Lisa Dion, LPC, RPT-S, is an international teacher, creator of Synergetic Play Therapy, founder and President of the Synergetic Play Therapy Institute, and host of the Lessons from the Playroom podcast. She is the author of Aggression in Play Therapy: A Neurobiological Approach for Integrating Intensity and is the 2015 recipient of the Association for Play Therapy’s Professional Education and Training Award of Excellence. Lisa Dion, LPC, RPT-S, is the founder and President of the Synergetic Play Therapy Institute, co-founder of the Synergetic Education Institute and the creator of Synergetic Play Therapy. Lisa built her first of six businesses in 2003 and has been building and creating ever since. She has written books, launched a successful podcast, is an international teacher and speaker, business coach to organizations and individuals worldwide, and she’s transitioned the Synergetic Play Therapy Institute from a local business to an international organization.

Instructor Jennifer Taylor, DSW, LCSW, RPT-S

Jennifer Taylor, DSW, LCSW, earned her Doctor of Social Work from the University of Kentucky, her Master of Social Work from Florida State University, and her Bachelor of Social Work from the University of West Florida. Dr. Taylor is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Florida and Maryland, a Registered Play Therapist–Supervisor, and an EMDR Approved Consultant. Dr. Taylor owns a private psychotherapy practice in Sarasota, Florida, where she specializes in complex interpersonal trauma. She is also the founder of Jennifer Taylor Play Therapy Services, a continuing education platform through which she organizes, teaches, and implements transformative training programs for mental health professionals. Dr. Taylor serves as Senior Manager of the Institute for Professional Development and Grant-Funded Clinical Programs at Jewish Community Services of Baltimore. In this role, she provides clinical leadership, program development, and oversight of large-scale behavioral health initiatives serving children and families. She has presented nationally and internationally and has authored multiple book chapters on play therapy, clinical supervision, and nature-based interventions. Dr. Taylor has also served as an adjunct professor of social work at the University of Memphis and the University of West Florida. Her research focuses on multistate licensure and clinical practice as a developing specialty area, informed by her lived experience practicing across five states as a military spouse. Her work emphasizes theoretically grounded clinical practice alongside intentional continuing education that fosters reflective, meaningful, and individualized professional development for clinicians and the clients they serve.

  • What COVID precautions are you taking?

    Your safety at this event is our number one concern, especially given that this event is designed to foster close connections! As such, we are taking a very conservative stance regarding COVID precautions. All participants will be required to show proof of a negative COVID test within 72 hours of arrival to the program, regardless of vaccination status. In addition, masks will be required during all program activities. Full refund (less $100 admin fee) before 11/30/2021 50% Refund until 12/31/2021 No refunds after 1/31/2022. COVID related cancellations: Due to the uncertain nature of the pandemic, the program organizers will follow all local, state, and national guidance regarding in-person events. If the event is cancelled due to hotel closures or other governmental regulations, participants will receive a full refund of program fees. The hotel venue has agreed to refund any lodging booked for this program in the event of a COVID related closure.
