Can You Guys Just Stop Fighting?”: Treating Childhood Trauma in Families Experiencing Custody and Visitation Disputes Using Play Therapy

Course Description:

In this seminar, participants will be encouraged to examine the various effects that parental conflict related to custody and visitation disputes have on children.  Emphasis will be placed on viewing these experiences through a trauma lens, allowing a clinician to shift their perspective in treatment modality for this population.  How these traumas impact children’s lives across multiple contexts creates a need for mental health professionals to be well versed in consulting with various providers and professionals to advocate for the client’s well-being.  Participants will learn techniques in consulting with caregivers and professionals to ensure that all parties involved are collaborating to maintain the emotional well-being of children.  Interventions for clinicians will also be provided, with an emphasis of play therapy being an appropriate modality due to its effectiveness in providing children a safe environment in which to process their feelings in a developmentally appropriate way.
