Course Description

Most of the research literature points to behavioral-based interventions for treating selective mutism (SM) in children but the research is limited and clinical experience with this populationIn in successfully treating this disorder lends to a theory that the nature of SM is best addressed with a prescriptive play therapy approach.  This 4 hour webinar you will learn about how and when to utilize CCPT, how and when to use CBPT and how and when behavioral-based interventions are most appropriate when treating this complex disorder in children ages 4-9. (Advanced)

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe the diagnostic criteria for SM and distinguish this diagnosis from trauma related mutism.
  2. Name the stages of selective mutism that indicate symptom severity and how they drive the prescriptive treatment plan.
  3. Explain the rationale and prescriptive timing within treatment for utilizing CCPT with children with selective mutism.
  4. Explain when and why cognitive behavioral play therapy and behavioral techniques are appropriate in treating selective mutism.
  5. List 10 directive play therapy interventions that correlate with various stages of symptom severity in selective mutism.
